Dome of Discovery Review in MAKING MUSIC, May 1994
The oddest record we’ve heard recently must be ‘Dome Of Discovery’ by Judge Smith. Chris Judge Smith was drummer and cofounder of Van der Graaf Generator, along with Peter Hammill, in the late 1960s, and went on to write everything from musicals to punk to opera to avant-garde free jazz, plus some rude songs for Not The Nine O’Clock News. The accompanying press-release from the Oedipus Recs label (“Music to give you a complex”, is their slogan) describes ‘Dome Of Discovery’ as sounding “like nothing on earth”. If you can imagine Thomas Dolby’s eccentric uncle (as played by Lionel Jeffries), you might get a rough idea. Intrigued? Ring 0246 567060.
